SUMMARY:inDIGenous Jazz Series
DESCRIPTION:Our 2019 inDIGenous Jazz Series concludes with jazz vocalist Betsy Ezell. The Betsy Ezell Quintet presents a diverse sound\, ranging from straight ahead jazz\, to blues\, to Latin jazz\, to gospel-infused soul. The original music is hopeful and thought-provoking and the band members bring a wide range of musical backgrounds to give the live performances compelling twists and turns. Her new recording Voices was released in January 2019. \nMany of the original songs from Voices were composed in 2018 as part of a writing and recording project called Feminine Blue\, supported in part by an Artistic Development Grant from the Greater Madison Jazz Consortium. The project explored women’s perspectives and unique voice in jazz\, as well as broader cultural themes like the #metoo movement. The music was composed collaboratively\, with the writing led by Ezell and edits\, additions\, input and support by Lang and Grant\, which was an intentional and more feminine way of creating. \n7:30pm at The Play Circle in The Wisconsin Union Theater\n800 Langdon St\, Madison Wisconsin \nAll shows are free\, all-ages\, and open to the public \nThe inDIGenous Jazz Series would like to thank our sponsors: Dane Arts\, Madison Arts Board\, John and Carolyn Peterson Charitable Foundation\, The Evjue Foundation\, Janus Galleries\, WORT\, and Bear Sound.

SUMMARY:Voices Album Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the release of the album Voices with the Betsy Ezell Quintet at the North Street Cabaret on Friday\, January 25 at 8pm. This exciting show will feature all of the music from Betsy’s debut album as well as music written and arranged by some of the best women jazz artists and other favorites. We’re excited to welcome drummer Chris Sandoval and special guest John Becker on vibes. \nThe North Street Cabaret is one of the best venues around for live music. The intimate room allows listeners to engage with the music making and the delicious food and drinks will keep you satisfied all evening. \nAnd Voices will be available for sale! The album is comprised of eight original compositions and one original arrangement of a jazz standard. Many of these songs were composed in 2018 as part of Betsy Ezell’s writing and recording project called “Feminine Blue”\, supported in part by the Greater Madison Jazz Consortium. The compositions are a reflection on what women uniquely bring to jazz and the cultural narratives around women and power. Intentionally collaborative\, Betsy was the lead writer with input\, editing and support from co-creators Becca May Grant (piano) and Laurie Lang (bass). \n
